Mayor of Niagara Falls accepting a trade mission invitation to Bulgaria recently.
Jim Diodati says the Bulgarian and Turkish consulates paid for the trip, which included a 20-minute interview on national TV.
He says they are interested in Niagara tourism, maple syrup, but also Niagara wines, as they have wine as well. "Because we actually have similar climates, just their's is a little more dry, because they have mountains around them. But, they were very interested, and we suggested their Chambers of Commerce, some of their 860,000 members, may be interested in imported some products from Niagara."
He says this is not usually in the city budget or mandate, but they took advantage of meetings. "Met with their Ministries of Foreign Affairs, met their tourism officials, we met with their travel agencies. In fact, the Turkish travel agency is the 2nd largest travel association in the world, only behind the USA."
