Deputy Treasurer says it's over $50-million in spending to maintain city assets, and for growth
After an over 4 hour meeting, Niagara Falls city councillors approved the capital budget for next year.
The city's Deputy Treasurer James Dowling says 97-projects were approved, including an amendment for accessible swings.
He spoke of the cost for taxpayers. "Over $50-million in capital investment in the community, it's leveraging a variety of different funding sources, none of which are creating an immediate impact to their property tax bill for next year."
He adds many councillors feel this is a responsible budget, focused on the city's assets.
"At a high level, when you're looking at the budget, you've got about 94% of the budget is focused on maintaining the city's current assets. Things like roads, fleet vehicles, parks, all the large infrastructure of the city."
He says as future costs are expected to rise, they'll have to look deeper at how budgets are put together.
