Mother Nature Hits Niagara Again

Update: Mayor Mat Siscoe declares State of Emergency as more homes, basements are flooded, as does Lincoln

Mayor Mat Siscoe has declared a State of Emergency, and so has the Town of Lincoln.

The declaration ensures the city has all the resources needed to help residents recover, but moreso gives more leverage to call in help from the provincial and federal governments.

The rain from Sunday night reached to Niagara Falls, including Mayor Jim Diodati's home, flooding his basement and those in his neighbourhood.

The City of St. Catharines will be having a press conference Tuesday morning at 9, and our newsroom will be there.

It's happening all over again... the City of St. Catharines and surrounding areas of Niagara are receiving more rain, and wind, with more basements flooding again.

The city released a statement tonight, declaring a significant weather event, as more than 100mm of rain has fallen through the day, repeating what happened Monday night.

City crews are working through calls for service, residents asked to call insurance company to make a claim if the basement is flooding.

Earlier in the day, Mayor Mat Siscoe released a video, from a basement, respectfully asking the provincial and federal governments for financial help, noting the city cannot do it all.

Social media is filled with commentary from residents dealing more of the same from Monday night, many facing flooded basements again.

The city adds anyone who's home has been impacted can use the Kiwanis centre's for washrooms and showers, it'll be open at 5:30am.

The city has worked with the Niagara Region to ensure garbage collection tomorrow, including areas of Merritton/Secord Woods, including unlimited regular garbage collection, but also large items such as furniture, and construction and demolition materials.  Appliances, scrap metal and hazardous waste are not included.

Tipping fees have been waived at Humberstone and Bridge Street landfills.
