Frank Campion says the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act responds to community concerns
The Mayor of Welland is offering his appreciation to the federal government for changes in the justice system.
Frank Campion writes he wants to thank Justice Minister Sean Fraser for listening to police and communities and taking action to strengthen Canada's bail and sentencing laws.
He recalls after a violent situation last year in Welland involving a repeat offender, the mayor publicly asked for government to address growing concerns of repeat violent crime and community safety.
The mayor says Minister Fraser acted swiftly, with the Bail and Sentencing Reform Act, making it tougher for repeat and violent offenders to make bail, including organized crime, home invasions and sex offences against children.
He doesn't specify what those changes are.
The mayor adds while there's always more to do, the government has shown it is able to listen.
