Niagara Falls council heard presentation that included steps taken for downtown branch
Reassurances to Niagara Falls city council the public library board is working to ensure safety, particularly in front of the Victoria Avenue and Morrison Street branch.
Councillor Ruth-Ann Nieuwesteeg raised community concerns about people hanging out in front.
Library CEO Alicia Kilgour pointed out they use security to ensure everyone is served. "There are unhoused folks that we serve, some come just to use our washroom. Because we're the only spot on our block that has an accessible washroom."
Mayor Jim Diodati commended the library for evolving to make sure it remains relevant. The library made a presentation outlining changes its made to stay relevant.
The CEO further explained they're working with everyone, including the city, police and community groups. "So, it's the behaviours that we're dealing with. In addition to that, we believe in a coordinated approach, working with our community partners. So, right now, we work with NASO (Niagara Assertive Street Outreach), the community street outreach."
She added local businesses have noticed an improvement.
