Heads Up: Welland Canal Opens Tomorrow

Time to check the bridges before you head out

A reminder for motorists who cross one of the Welland Canal Bridges to get to work or school.

The canal connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, is scheduled to open tomorrow at 8 a.m., followed by the Montreal-Lake Ontario Section, which is set to open March 22 at 8 a.m.

The canal system officially opens tomorrow.

The traditional top hat ceremony will go virtual because of the pandemic.

Typically the captain of the first down bound vessel in the Canal is presented with a ceremonial beaver fur top hat from the 1890's

A replica hat will be sent to the captain this year instead.

The ceremony kicks off at 8:00 tomorrow morning.
