Province preparing to look for land on which to build new GO station in Grimsby
Another step forward by the provincial government to build a new GO station in Grimsby.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria was there this morning, alongside the Regional Chairman, and Mayors of Niagara Falls, Grimsby and St. Catharines, announcing the province is putting out a Request for Proposal, in that it's looking for land to build on.
Infrastructure Minister Kinga Surma was also there, adding this is part of provincial investment in Niagara. "Along our GO transit lines, we have an incredible opportunity to also build housing where we will build the station. And, we have an opportunity to build approximately 150,000 new homes along our GO rail system."
The Transport Minister hopes to have the contract awarded to build given by the spring.
Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says rail in best way to travel. "I can tell you as I quote one of the business people in Niagara, who refers to this as the economic silver bullet for the Niagara Region, I see it as somewhat of an umbilical cord tying us into the GTA."
Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff added he comes across constituents in Toronto who ask about the Grimsby GO station.
The province recently announced $850-million to refurbish GO trains at plants in Thunder Bay and North Bay.
