GM Issues Recall Over Exploding Airbag Inflators

Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic, Volt and Buick Verano vehicles from 2013 affected

General Motors is recalling about 900 vehicles sold in Canada and the US.

The recall covers Chevrolet Camaro, Sonic and Volt vehicles, as well as the Buick Verano, all from the 2013 model year.

The company says the vehicles are equipped with airbag inflators that could explode and hurl shrapnel in a crash.

The inflators are among a group made by Takata that are being investigated, but have not been previously recalled.

According to GM, at least 26 people have been killed in the U.S. by the inflators since May 2009, and over 400 people have been injured.

Volatile ammonium nitrate was used to create a small explosion and inflate the airbags in the event of a crash.

However, the chemical can deteriorate over time and explode with excessive force, blowing apart a metal cannister and hurling shrapnel.
