Proposed bill would eliminate the basic tax on Ontario wines
Niagara Falls MPP Wayne Gates is looking to pass a bill to help winemakers grow.
If passed, the motion would eliminate the basic tax for wines produced in the province.
"Ontario’s wine industry is critically important to the local economy, especially here in Niagara," said Gates. "My bill is a common-sense approach that will support this valued industry and provide benefits to workers, businesses, and visitors alike."
The bill looks to get rid of the 6.1 percent basic tax on all on-site retail sales of wines with 100 percent Ontario grapes and VQA wines.
The tax isn't currently applied to foreign-imported wines.
The bill follows the Uncork Ontario report, which notes the tax burden is one of the main barriers to growth.
Niagara's wine industry is the largest in the country.
