Mayor Wayne Redekop says final tax levy expected in a few weeks
Fort Erie town council is working through the numbers for the 2023 budget.
Mayor Wayne Redekop tells us the water and wastewater bill is going up about 4.25%, which is half of what the region is facing.
After careful scrutiny, he says the final tax levy will be revealed in a few weeks, once they get a better idea of what the region is doing.
"It's all well and good for government to have costs they're trying to cover, but they have to be costs that are affordable to the people that are paying those bills, which is the property taxpayer," he says.
The mayor adds Fort Erie will not have to charge for transit, 4-percent, as that cost goes to the new Niagara Transit System.
He's also optimistic the library will help. "We know that the library board is probably coming in requesting somewhat less than 2%, which is pretty remarkable considering they're faced with the same pressures everyone else is, in terms of inflation, supply chain delays, etc."
