Announcement comes after Meta promised to block Canadian news content on the two social media platforms
The federal government has announced plans to stop advertising on Instagram and Facebook.
Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez made the announcement earlier today.
The country recently passed the Online News Act, which prompted Meta to block Canadian news content on the platforms, starting at the end of the year.
The law will require tech companies to pay media outlets for content that is shared or repurposed on their platforms.
Rodriguez criticized Meta's decision, calling it "unreasonable" and "irresponsible."
Google has also said it will block Canadian news when the bill takes effect, but Rodriguez says talks between the company and the federal government continue.
