St. Catharines council votes to find owner for nativity scene, and other displays
If you'd like to take ownership of the City of St. Catharine's nativity scene, your chance is coming.
Council narrowly voted last week to continue to allow all cultural displays for city property on display, but the groups they represent must maintain ownership and responsibility.
Council also narrowly voted to reject a lighting display, which is used in other cities such as Welland.
Councillor Robin McPherson was in favour of the lighting display, to represent all events. "The time has passed to have large displays on city hall, like the nativity scene.... I don't have anything against nativity scenes, but there is one just down the street at the cathedral that people can visit."
Councillor Joe Kushner argued for the physical displays, adding all faiths should be included, not excluded.
"My daughter lived in Singapore for several years... although not a Christian country, they celebrated Christmas, Happy New Years, and then the Chinese New Year, and the Muslim holiday was big... but they celebrated their differences," he said.
