Haley Bateman plans to ask regional staff what is being done to ensure no one is left in cold
As the colder weather moves into Niagara, a regional councillor wants to make sure no homeless person is left outside.
Haley Bateman will soon ask regional staff that all resources are used, meaning the region goes out in the cold, late at night, looking for people.
She adds it's not a criticism of regional staff, in making sure they know where to look. "John was supposed to be in, it's past 11pm, he's been gone for 4 hours, the weather is getting worse, and worse, and worse, so please be on the lookout for John Smith. He's known to the officers, he's likely known to EMS."
She says the region does its best, it's up to the province to provide more help.
She has a hard time believing people will refuse help, especially when freezing. "We use the excuse of addiction, as to why people aren't seeking help. Maybe they're out there getting high, or doing whatever, but, if we're following health mandates, we understand addiction is a disease, and they need support services."
She also doesn't know why these aren't considered missing person cases.
