Niagara Falls councillor Ruth-Ann Nieuwesteeg's motion passed, after a number of deaths over the years
Niagara Falls city council has voted to look into how safety can be improved in Chippewa Creek.
Councillor Ruth-Ann Nieuwesteeg brought forth the motion, saying too many people have died there.
She stressed this is not to limit the fun people have, as they ask city staff to research the idea. "If they can even reach out to the people who use it, because they are the best source of information... such as the people who launch their boats, the people at Tim Hortons where they have their boat docks as well."
Councillor Wayne Thompson acknowledged area paramedics for how many people they have saved over the years.
Councillor Mike Strange issued a warning about the dangers of swimming in the area.
He recalled years ago when they used to jump off the break wall, with a strong undertow lurking beneath. "You don't realize the pull, when people bring their rafts down, with no life jackets, it's so dangerous you can just fall off... and that's it, you can drown within 20 seconds, and it's going to be kind of impossible, especially when it's dark to rescue anyone."
The motion is to collaborate with emergency services and other community groups to improve safety, and was passed.
