Niagara Falls fire department called Monday night for fire on the roof
Total damage estimate could reach $2-million after a fire at the Foodland grocery store on Dock Street in Chippawa Monday night.
Niagara Falls Chief Fire Prevention Officer Ben Trendle says the store will be closed for an undetermined time.
He adds it started on the roof where some work was being done. "In a lot of commercial roofing applications, heating sources are used to heat tar, and other roofing materials to make sure they adhere properly. And it's our belief that's what generated or caused this fire."
He says other businesses in the plaza were impacted too.
The damage estimate includes the amount of business lost during cleanup.
He's also impressed with community support seen online for people who shop there regularly. "Looking at possibly coordinated ways for folks to get groceries, whether it's coordinating rides, because a lot of people rely on walking to the grocery store, and now they can't do that for the time being."
