New scam could result in identity fraud
The Canadian Anti Fraud Centre is warning Canadians about a new scam.
The group says fraudsters are using compromised social media accounts, claiming they need help setting up a new cell phone.
The scammer often says they need a code to do this, or they ask people to click on a link to finish the setup.
People who follow the directions then get their social media and possibly their device hacked.
At this point, messages are then sent to the victim's contacts, asking for the same favour.
The agency also notes there have been reports of identity fraud from victims who have clicked on the links.
If you receive a message like this, you're advised to contact the person directly, using another form of communication.
