Maybe its time to take the old adage, waste not want not, to heart
A new United Nations report estimates 17 per cent of the food produced globally each year is wasted.
That amounts to 931 million tonnes of food.
And here in Canada we are some of the top food wasters.
According to the report, the average Canadian wastes 79 kilograms of food a year at home, more than the average American at 59 kg and similar to the amount wasted by the average person in the U.K. at 77 kg.
And some experts blame food expiry dates in part.
They point out "Best By" labels can cause people to throw out food prematurely even though most of those dates signal when the item has hit peak freshness and quality might begin to decline.
