Brock University students looking to safeguard Garden City Arena memories once building gets decommissioned next year.
Brock University wants your recollections of the Garden City Arena in St. Catharines.
The building, which has hosted everything from concerts to sporting events such as hockey and lacrosse, is being decommissioned in 2022.
The arena has played a significant role in the city for the past 85 years.
Brock University is holding a memory collecting drop-in event at the arena on Saturday, November 27th, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Students will be on hand to record people's recollections and photograph or scan items like event flyers, concert ticket stubs, skates and more.
"It’s about more than just sports - the arena provides a starting point for exploring broader issues in local, national and even global history, including gender, race and class relations, deindustrialization and urban renewal," says Associate Professor of History Elizabeth Vlossak. The arena’s uncertain future emphasizes the importance of this memory collecting event."
Students have teamed up with the school's Archives and Special Collections and the St. Catharines Museum to research the arena's history for upcoming digital exhibits.
Anyone attending the event will need to wear a mask, bring proof of vaccination and complete the City's COVID-19 screening in advance, if possible.
Anyone unable to attend can submit their memories here.
