Board decides on allowing French and Mahaffy families at Bernardo virtual hearing next week
After receiving swift backlash, the Parole Board of Canada is reversing its decision to block the families of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy from delivering in-person victim impact statements at a parole hearing of convicted killer Paul Bernardo.
The reason given was the parole board could not guarantee safety during the hearing.
The lawyer for the families, Tim Danson, released the decision late Tuesday.
In a statement Wednesday night the parole board said it was working to accommodate an in-person presentation of statements ahead of Tuesday’s hearing for Bernardo.
The girls were tortured, sexually assaulted and murdered in a home in St. Catharines in the early 1990’s.
Bernardo is serving a life sentence and has been designated a dangerous offender making it unlikely he will ever be released from jail.
