Animal Justice not convinced whales won't be used for entertainment in the US
An animal rights group is not impressed with an American plan to move the beluga whales from Marineland to US marine parks, and one in Spain.
Animal Justice Senior Staff Lawyer Alexandra Pestra says the American sites are tanks, basically the same as Marineland.
She's concerned the whales will continue to be used for entertainment. "It is very critical for the federal government, if they are going to issue any permits for these animals to leave Canada, it is absolutely essential that there be clear, no breeding conditions, and no entertainment use conditions. This has to be the last generation of whales to suffer in Canada."
She's looking at the American plan with scepticism. "What we see now with this so-called Emergency Rescue Operation, is that the emergency is something that Marineland created, they're claiming that they can no longer care for these animals. But, they're sitting on property that's worth upwards of $500-million, and for putting the onus on government to bail them out."
She says it's disappointing it appears Marineland has not been willing to consider the Nova Scotia sanctuary option.
