The region working to help the homeless
A plan to build 945 supportive housing units to help the homeless has been approved by Niagara's public health committee.
Homeless Services Manager Brendon Nicholson reminded council that emergency rooms, shelters and other services will keep taking on the burden.
He says they're looking at all funding sources, from every government. "We're looking to apply through existing funding programs, and we know of the recently announced Build Canada Homes Fund program, specifically names supportive housing as a priority."
Financial consultant Mike Iafrate says funding will also be done by rent paid by tenents, government grants, and the region's budget.
Councillor Joyce Morocco explained the importance of supportive housing. "There is no place for people with severe, chronic mental health, and drug addiction. We are lobbying the government and I hope they are listening, at least someone is listening, that we get back to them, as this is a need, I know that there is some talks happening."
Nicholson noted speed is important in getting the units built, while balancing taxpayers ability to pay.
