Wellspring Niagara is opening its doors on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for Community Day, a free event at 50 Wellspring Way, Fonthill, held to thank the community who make its cancer support programs possible.
"This day is our thank you," said Ann Mantini-Celima, Executive Director of Wellspring Niagara. "The difference we make in the lives of people living with cancer isn't something Wellspring Niagara does on its own. It happens because of our community. So come spend the day with us — bring your family, bring a friend."
The day is also a chance for neighbours to see the centre for themselves and learn what happens inside it.
What Wellspring Niagara does
Wellspring Niagara provides free emotional, psychological, informational and social support to people living with cancer and to their families. Every program is free, and no doctor's referral is needed. Anyone affected by cancer is welcome.
The support is non-medical and holistic, covering emotional, social, physical and practical needs — from fatigue management and counselling to exercise classes and financial or workplace coaching. Programs also include peer support groups, expressive art, coping skills workshops, and practical supports such as wigs and a resource lending library.
Services are available in person at the Fonthill centre or virtually through the wider Wellspring network.
Where donations go
Because programs are offered at no cost to participants, Wellspring Niagara relies entirely on community donations and receives no government or hospital funding. Every gift goes directly toward keeping the doors open and the programs free.
That support is reaching more people every year. In 2025, 691 new members registered with Wellspring Niagara — a 15 per cent increase over 2024 — and members attended programs 11,562 times, up 25 per cent from the year before.
Donations fund entire programs. It now costs about $100,000 to run the Cancer Exercise Program for a full year, $25,000 to support children and their parents through family programs, and $20,000 to offer all yoga and gentle movement classes for a year.
"Programs like Art Therapy and our Cancer Exercise Program are free to anyone impacted by cancer, and that isn't because of government or hospital funding," said Mantini-Celima. "It's because of the generosity of this community. For more than 25 years, that compassion has given families navigating treatment, fatigue and isolation a place to rebuild their strength and come back to life."
